In Alabama, we’re used to a lot of wildlife. Many people live in houses surrounded by trees, which means there’s definitely going to be some animals poking around. Make sure animals aren’t in your roof or attic! If left to run rampant and make a home in your home, they can seriously damage all sorts of things inside, such as insulation, plumbing, and wiring.
It’s important to regularly inspect your roof on the outside and the inside.
Here 5 tips to keep the animals out
1. Look out
- Inspect the attic for clues of life, such as droppings, nests, chew marks, or holes to the outside.
- Listen for sounds— scurrying, thumping, squeaking.
- Sprinkle sand on the ground or near any openings. Animals may leave tracks.
2. Look around the roof
- Look for holes between your roof and the wall. Even the smallest holes are enough for an animal to squeeze through.
- Decorative trim can hide openings and gaps near your roof line.
- Vent covers and other openings that can be manipulated.
3. Seal it off
- Vent covers
- Chimney fires
- Steel screens
4. Clean Your roof up
- Keep garbage secure, otherwise, it’s a free meal.
- Clean your pet’s bowl if it’s outside; otherwise, it’s a free meal.
- Secure compost; otherwise, it’s a free meal.
5. Trim it down.
- Clean branches from nearby trees or you’ll give animals a chance to leap into your home.
