Selecting Splendid Shingles

Shingles are meant to last a long time, so you better pick a style that you like. There are many types of shingles to choose from, considering the shingle type, style, and color.

Here’s a three-step guide to help select the perfect shingles for you.

  1. The type.
  • These two are the most popular types of shingles for homeowners and the differences between them.
  • Regular asphalt shingles: these are also known as 3-tab shingles, and are flat with one shingle tab shape and size. They are lighter than the other type we’re going to talk about, but despite the comparable prices, these shingles are less durable than the laminate shingles.
  • Laminate/architectural shingles: essentially an asphalt shingle with a heavier base mat and a greater number of layers of more refined asphalt; they came in many size and shapes!
  1. The features.
  • Think about your environmental conditions: do you live in an area with high winds or lots of snow? Something to consider when choosing your dream shingles.
  • How do you want your shingles to look up on that roof? Consider the dimension — architectural shingles do this shadow thing that give your house extra pizzazz with a shadow effect
  • When we think of algae, we usually think of ponds, but sometimes they can grow on roofs! Luckily, shingles these days can be made with built-in guards that fight algae and discoloration.
  • We try to stay positive at Blue Angels Roofing, but we also appreciate disaster preparedness. Make sure your shingles have a high fire rating to defend yourself from severe exposure.
  1. The color.
  • You want your house to be pretty! Certain shingles clash with certain styles of homes. Also, keep in mind that if you might be selling your home any time in the future, you should pick a relatively neutral kind of shingle, not something wild. It depends on you and your house’s style.
