Shingle vs. Shingle (3-tab vs Laminate)

So maybe you read our post on picking shingles, but you need more details. We got you covered. Today, we’re going to write about the two most popular type of shingles that homeowners use.

Asphalt Shingles.

Also known as 3-tab shingles. These shingles are flat and only have one shingle tab shape and size. They are usually half the weight of the other type of shingles, and thus cheaper, but take more time to install. Thus, the price actually comes out to the same. 3-tabs are also more prone to strong winds, meaning bad conditions could knock them off your house or at least offset them. They typically have a warranty of 20 to 30 years.

Laminate Shingles.

Also known as “laminated architectural” or architectural shingles. These shingles are heavier and have multiple material layers. They come in different shapes and sizes, which leads to a more dimensional appearance and can give some spiciness to your roof. They do tend to be more expensive than 3-tabs, but they are faster to install, so the price comes out the same. However, architectural shingles are stronger and more hardy, with warranties up to 30 to 50 years. Because of their durability, it’s honestly a long term investment to use these, compared to asphalt shingles, especially if you’re thinking about selling your house.
