Shingle Warranties 101

In a previous post, we discussed the type of warranties that may be found in the contract with your roofer. In this post, we wanted to discuss in detail one of those warranties—shingles. Let’s talk about what they are.

Shingle Warranties: usually addressed in supplier warranties of your contract, these are done by the manufacturer of your roofer’s supplies. They provide coverage against product or manufacturing defects for a length of time, which can range from five to fifty years. This means if something happens during that time, the manufacturer will make repairs or replacements.

The other warranty you might run into is the workmanship warranties. These are agreements between you and the roofer in regards to the work that’s completed.

What does a “lifetime” mean? Lifetime means for as long as the original owner owns the home on which the shingles and accessories were installed. If you install a new or replacement roof, the warranty on your shingles will be good for as long as you own the home or until the term on the warranty expires.

What does it mean if my shingle warranty is prorated? Like pretty much everything, shingles deteriorate over time and use. Since shingles are on the outside of your home through all kinds of weather, this is pretty constant. Their value is calculated to decrease.

What types of damages are covered by a shingle warranty? Shingle defects include excessive blistering, curling, and bald spots. Read your contract to see if the manufacturer provides coverage against all manufacturing defects or just defects that affect performance.
