Storm-Proof Roof

Okay, so maybe the title is a little misleading: no roof is storm-proof, but a good roof can protect you and your family from a storm, which is why it’s such a major investment. After seeing many cases throughout our roofing in birmingham Al, we gathered some things you can do to protect your roof and keep it in tip-top shape to safeguard your home.

3 tips to maximize your roof for the storm

  1. Clear trees away from your roof.

During severe weather, a roof is prone to be crushed or hit by debris. Storms can make objects airborne. This is particularly true of trees. A roof is qualified to protect your house from a twig or two, but consider a trunk or even just a larger branch or limb. Then give that flying object a little speed from the storm, and the results could be catastrophic damage. Make sure trees are cut back at least six feet from your home. Be wary of trees that could fall on your home.

  1. Inspect for leaks.

Storms can exacerbate leaks in the roof, especially ones you didn’t know you had. The first place you want to look is your attic for any signs of water damage, spots, or stains. If you’re not sure or it’s been pretty dry lately, ask someone to use a hose on the roof and see what pops up.

  1. Give your roof a scheduled check-up.

You should be doing this anyway. Here are some things to look for:

  • Damaged or missing shingles
  • Damaged sealant
  • Loose, damaged, or missing nails
  • Rust
